Spring Term  (1st Half)

Curriculum Information

English

In English this half term, we are writing traditional tales.  We will also be writing persuasive letters to our favourite British pop stars persuading them to perform at our school.  We will continue using Pie Corbett's Talk4writing techniques to help us internalise the texts and become better writers.  Ask us to recite what we have done so far this year!

Maths

In Maths this half term, we will be continuing our work on the four calculations.  We will also be focusing on the year 3 non negotiable targets.  Use pairs of numbers that total 100 (and subtraction facts), read and then write numbers to 1000 in words and do simple divisions including remainders e.g. 27 divided by 5.  As well as daily work on our times tables and regular work on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Theme –

Our Theme is called Top of the Pops and is a music driven theme topic.  We will be looking at different instruments and styles of music, writing letters to pop stars, describing different forms of music, debating our favourite types of music, creating our own music, evaluating our own music and performing our own songs.  For homework your task is to use the internet to find five facts about a British music artist of your choice.

Autumn Term  (2nd Half)

In English this half term, we are writing non-chronological reports.  We will also be studying, writing and performing different styles of poetry.  We will continue using Pie Corbett's Talk For Writing techniques to help us internalise the texts and become better writers.  Ask us to recite what we have done so far this year!

Maths

In Maths this half term, we will be continue our work on the four calculations.  We will also be focusing on the year 3 non negotiable targets.  Compare and order numbers to 1000, know the value of each digit (to 4 places) and read and write numbers to 1000 in numerals.  As well as daily work on our times tables and regular work on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Theme –

Our Theme will still be called 'Rock Around the Clock' and this half term will focus on the history of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.  For homework your task is to use the internet to find five facts about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Homework is given out on a Thursday and should be returned by the Tuesday. Children are rewarded with a merit each week for handing in their homework on time!

Please read with your child every night. Children in Starfish class can change their book whenever they need to they just need to ask Miss Bibi to help them. We have a library in school which the children are encouraged to use. They can choose a book of their choice to read in school.

Feel free to pop into class to ask any questions or to have a chat about your child’s learning and progress.

Many thanks,

Mrs Shazad and the Starfish team!

Autumn Term  (1st Half)

Curriculum Information

English

In English this half term, we have been learning how to write diary entries. Firstly, we learnt how to recite a whole diary entry using actions and a text map to help us. Next, we learnt how to use all the features of a diary entry including writing in first person, using adjectives to describe the setting, thoughts and feelings, writing in past tense, and using time connectives to sequence our writing. Finally, we wrote a diary entry of own from the perspective of The Stone Age Boy (a character from the book Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura which we have been using in our Theme and English lessons).

In English we are now moving onto writing warning stories. We are learning the story of Dennis and the Greedy Dragon by heart and  reading lots of other warning stories to help our understanding of what makes a  good warning story. We will soon be writing our own warning stories set in the Stone Age ready to read to reception as part of a special story time.

Maths

In Maths this half term, we will be focusing on understanding the place value of numbers and being able to manipulate numbers to make mental addition and subtraction easier. We have been making numbers using practical equipment, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, partitioning numbers, counting on and back and using number bonds to 10 and 20. We are also working hard to learn our 2, 5 and 10 times tables so any help at home with these would be fantastic!

Theme

Our theme this term is ‘Rock Around The Clock’ which this half term has a science focus. We will be learning about rocks, soils, fossils, volcanoes and earthquakes – an interesting topic to find out about at home. We are going on a trip to Cliffe Castle Museum to take part in some workshops about rocks, soils and fossils and to go on a special 'rock trail' which will involve learning about their large collection of fascinating rocks.

PE takes place on Tuesdays (indoor) and Wednesdays (outdoor) – a full PE kit is required in school for each session and in case we have an extra session throughout the week.

Homework is given out on a Thursday and should be returned by the Tuesday. Children are rewarded with a merit each week for handing in their homework on time!

Please read with your child every night. Children in Starfish class can change their book whenever they need to they just need to ask Mrs Hampson to help them. We have a library in school which the children are encouraged to use. They can choose a book of their choice to read in school.

Feel free to pop into class to ask any questions or to have a chat about your child’s learning and progress.

Year 3 Starfish 2104/15

Summer 1 - the start of our final term this year

English:

  • We will be continuing with our leaflets from last term.
  • We will be writing stories focusing on what makes a story exciting and interesting to read - please read as many stories as you can with your children and discuss what made them enjoyable.
  • We will finish the half term by reading, performing and writing poetry - when you visit the library with your child, perhaps look at poetry books this time, as well as story books.

Maths:

  • We will continue with our understanding of numbers - place value, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Looking for patterns and links with what we already know will help us with this, e.g. 12 add 28 must end in 0 as 2 add 8 is a number bond to 10.
  • Times tables are also very important and help us with fractions and telling the time. Start with 2x, 5x and10x and then move to 3x, 4x, and 6x. Finally learn 7x, 8x and 9x. It is also useful to learn the division facts at the same time, e.g. if you know 3 x 4 = 12, then you also know that 4 x 3 = 12, 12

Theme:

  • Our summer theme is entitled 'Bring me Sunshine' and is linked to PE/sports.
  • It will involve looking at tennis, athletics and football.
  • We will be covering PE (the skills required to play different sports and how to work as a team), science (how sports affect our body, bones and muscles), music (what makes a sport tune memorable, creating our own sports theme tune)

PSHE, RE, PE and ICT are also taught weekly. Ask the children each day what they have been learning and then you can keep up with their education.

Spring 2

Wow! We are now half way through year 3 - where has the time gone?

English - For the first two weeks of term we will be focusing on stories. We will be thinking about what makes a great story, looking at how they are put together and writing our own versions of a given story. After this we will be looking at persuasive writing and writing a tourism leaflet, linked to our theme, encouraging people to visit York.

Maths – We will be having a big push on times tables this half term - 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 10x. The children need to be able to answer these quickly and give the matching division fact, e.g. 3 x 10 = 30 so 30 divided by 3 = 10. Finding fractions of amounts and shapes and solving problems involving the four operations (+  -  x  ÷) will be focused on too. We will also be measuring length, weight and capacity. One of our maths targets this term is to know how to tell the time so it would be really helpful if you could practise this at home as much as  you can.

Theme - we will be continuing with Revolting, Rotten, Remarkable and the Romans. This time we will be linking it to geography. York was a very important city to the Romans so we will research how it changed during the Roman times and what they left behind.

We hope you have enjoyed looking at our theme display in the cloakroom. The children can bring work in at any time to add to this. Here are some useful websites:

http://primaryfacts.com/3094/york-facts-and-information/

http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/romans/towns.htm

There are other suitable websites but please remember to monitor your child on the internet.

Please continue to read with your child and ask them questions about their book. Children in Starfish class can change their book whenever they need to they just need to ask Mr Thorne to help them.

Feel free to pop into class to ask any questions or to have a chat about your child’s learning and progress.

Many thanks,

Miss Duffy and the Starfish team!
