Year 1 monkeys - 2017/18
Class Teacher: Miss Ullah
Classroom Support: Mrs Barrett
Hello and thank you for taking your time to visit. I hope you have had a restful holiday and are looking forward to all the exciting learning we have planned this term.
Izzy Wizzy Let’s get busy! We are the magic toymakers at your service. Here to bring fun and excitement to year one classrooms.
As part of our topic “The Magic Toymaker,” children are going to learn all about the history of toys and more! Toys come in many different shapes and sizes. But they are designed for us to have fun, to learn new skills and to exercise our bodies and minds. We will celebrate our favourite toys, make toys and learn about the toys our parents and grandparents played with when they were children.
In English, we will be reading and responding to ‘Pinocchio,’ the famous wooden puppet who comes to life. We will compare real life toys with toys in famous books and learn about how they influence our lives. We will use our imagination and write stories about what would happen if our favourite toys came to life like Pinocchio.
We will learn to identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. We will explore the different materials toys are made out of and why.
We will be looking at significant events and people from the past with a focus on Celebrations, Alexander Graham-Bell and Father Christmas. We plan to be good girls and boys so Santa can bring us lots of toys!!!
We will have the opportunity to develop our design and making skills in DT by planning, designing and eventually creating a moving toys. We will be using joining methods such as gluing, adding hinges and combining materials to design and make telephones, cards and decorations
We will learn about shape and space and name and describe the features of “d and 3D shapes. We will also learn about adding 1 more, 1 less and ordering numbers by their place value. We want to become super mathematicians so we will continue to solve problems including addition and subtraction using concrete (real) objects and pictorial representations. To help us develop our investigative skills in maths, sometimes we may answer ‘probing’ questions to check our learning and to see if we can explain our answers.
Please take a look at our Topic web for more information.
As we did last term, your child will be bringing home a 'Look, say, cover, write and check spelling sheet every Friday. There are columns in which they can write their words, and they will be tested on these words the following Friday. To help your child further you can help them write the words into a sentence which really helps children to understand how and when to use the words correctly. Please support your child in practicing their spellings and if you have any questions don't hesitate to come and ask any of the Key Stage 1 team
Reading - online books
In addition to the school reading books which children take home, we now also have access to Active Learning which is an online reading resource for you to access at home.
Go to www.activelearn
Your child's username will be their first name with a capital letter and then their password which for Monkeys class is 'Monkeys'.
Reminder - Please ensure you wear BLACK shoes to school. If you wear your wellies to school you need to bring some pumps to change into. Please wear your school uniform every day.
We are always available at the start and end of the school day. Please come and see us if you have any questions or if you just want to say Hello! : )
