Hello and thank you for taking your time to visit. I hope you have had a restful holiday and are looking forward to all the exciting learning we have planned this summer term.
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Yes, you have guessed correctly! Our topic this summer half term is ‘Destination Outer Space!’
As part of our topic on 'space' we will learn all about the first landing on the moon by the famous American astronaut Neil Armstrong. We will research his life and how he was chosen to command the space shuttle APOLLO 11. We will also learn to name, describe and order the planets, the solar system and other fascinating facts about our amazing universe!
In English, we will be reading and responding to traditional texts by famous authors Jill Murphy and Oliver Jeffers (Whatever Next and The Way Back Home). We will be using descriptive writing to write poetry on space, including shape poems about rockets, acrostic poems about space and the planets and practise writing postcards and letters from outerspace.
We will learn all about the life of Neil Armstrong who was the first man on the moon.We will learn all about the different space shuttles including the Gemini 8 and the Apollo 11. We will develop our Literacy skills and write newspaper articles about the first landing on the moon.
We will have the opportunity to develop our design and making skills and understand the features of space rockets, how to make them safe and a comfortable place to stay. We will look at the designs of famous rockets such as the black armadillo, alpha, kistler, nova, Canadian arrow and roton.
We will continue to develop our knowledge and understanding of the four operations to help us solve one step problems involving concrete objects and pictorial representations using money and real life problems. We will also compare, describe and solve practical problems for mass/weight [for example, heavy/light, heavier than, lighter than]; capacity and volume.
Much of our time in Science will be used to learn about the planets and the solar system. We will learn to name and order the planets and describe them in detail, including their size, space, their physical features, temperature and how many moons they have.
Please take a look at our Topic web for more information.
As we did last term, your child will be bringing home a 'Look, say, cover, write and check spelling sheet every Friday. There are columns in which they can write their words, and they will be tested on these words the following Friday. To help your child further you can help them write the words into a sentence which really helps children to understand how and when to use the words correctly. Please support your child in practicing their spellings and if you have any questions don't hesitate to come and ask any of the Key Stage 1 team
Reading - online books
In addition to the school reading books which children take home, we now also have access to Active Learning which is an online reading resource for you to access at home.
Go to www.activelearn
Your child's username will be their first name with a capital letter and then their password which for Monkeys class is 'Monkeys'.
Reminder - Please ensure you wear BLACK shoes to school. If you wear your wellies to school you need to bring some pumps to change into. Please wear your school uniform every day.
We are always available at the start and end of the school day. Please come and see us if you have any questions or if you just want to say Hello! : )
